Sleep apnoea and fatigue
Excess weight, notably around the neck and belly, can obstruct breathing during sleep. Sleep apnoea causes snoring, micro-awakenings, persistent tiredness and raises blood pressure.
Good to know
- Poor sleep also disrupts hunger hormones: you crave more sugar and fat the next day.
- Losing weight often reduces the severity of apnoea.
- If you snore loudly, have witnessed breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness, talk to your doctor.
