Heart, blood pressure and cholesterol
Excess weight makes the heart work harder and promotes high blood pressure, higher triglycerides and "bad" cholesterol (LDL), and lower "good" cholesterol (HDL). Together these raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Good news
- A moderate weight loss is often enough to lower blood pressure and triglycerides.
- Cutting salt (under 5 g a day), limiting processed meats and ready meals, and moving regularly protect the heart.
- Waist size is a good indicator: above 102 cm (men) or 88 cm (women), risk is substantially increased.
