Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance
Excess weight, especially around the belly, makes cells less sensitive to insulin. The pancreas compensates for a while, then wears out: blood sugar rises and type 2 diabetes can set in, often with no symptoms at first.
What we know
- The larger the waist, the higher the risk of type 2 diabetes.
- Losing 5 to 10% of your weight clearly improves blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.
- Regular physical activity helps muscles use sugar, regardless of weight.
Signs not to ignore
Intense thirst, frequent urination, unusual fatigue, slow-healing wounds. A blood sugar check by a doctor is advised if you are overweight or have a family history.
